Interview with author Terri Fergason Neal

Mr Liquid Crystal: The Untold Story of How James L. Fergason Invented the Liquid Crystal Display & Helped Create the Digital World.

1. What really inspired you to write your book, to force you
from taking an idea or experience and conveying it into a
book?
My father began the original manuscript about his life before he died of cancer. He wanted to get his story out there for budding inventors and also to set the story straight about his invention of the TN-LCD. He was unable to finish it before he passed away. I felt that his story needed to be told, so I took the rough manuscript and began working on it. As I worked on it, I began to understand him more and actually found myself closer to him.

2. What is it about and whom do you believe us your targeted
reader?
Anyone interested in technology, history, aspiring inventors, people curious in how the world works.

3. What do you hope will be the everlasting thoughts
for readers who finish your book? What should remain with
them long after putting it down?
Failures, mistakes, setbacks are a part of life. It is what you do after those that truly matter. Identify the problem and devise new ways to solve it. Follow your passion.

4. What advice or words of wisdom do you have for fellow
writers?
There were a lot of ups and downs finishing this book. I was inspired by how his friends were so happy to fill in missing information about his life and about his impact on their lives. He inspired so many people. Treasure your happy moments to get through the difficult ones. I made several mistakes trying to finish the book but you pick yourself up and continue on. Listen to the critiques, but don’t take them personally.

5. What trends in the book world do you see and where do you
think the book publishing industry is heading?
I see a lot more people being able to express themselves through self-publishing. Getting a traditional publisher is very difficult if you and your subject matter is unknown. With self-publishing more people are getting their voice heard with fantastic results!

6. What great challenges did you have in writing your
book?
The original manuscript was missing a lot of information. Filling it in was challenging. It was also very scattered.  I would say one of the more challenging problems was cutting information out. Some of it was from his original work and it almost felt sacrilegious. You need to take a step back and realize it is not precious and let the excess material go.

7. If people can only buy one book this month, why should it
be yours?
Every time you watch a flat screen tv, look at a text on your phone, type an email on your computer, you are using James Fergason’s invention. He has already influenced your world.

The digital world would not exist were it not for the twisted nematic liquid crystal display (TN-LCD). It is used ubiquitously in our computer screens, medical equipment, televisions, cell phones, watches, calculators, and many other items of advanced technology. Mr. Liquid Crystal reveals the inside story of James L. Fergason, Tn-LCD’s brilliant inventor. This is a fascinating and insightful book for scientists, inventors, technology geeks, history buffs and anyone else who is fascinated by the creative process of invention.   Check out: MrLiquidCrystal.com
